  1. Should the European Banking Authority maintain the cap on financial sector bonuses?

Requirement:

This assignment requires you to explore a real-world application of an example of asymmetric information.

Your answer must be no more than 500 words (12-point font, double spaced, not including any diagrams or references).

The Question

(i) Define the three types of price discrimination, clearly stating the different information requires of each type of discrimination. (100 words)

(ii) Find a real-world example of second-degree price discrimination. Describe the important aspects of your example in detail and analyse it using economic theory. In particular, how does the producer discriminate between the types of consumers? That is, how does the producer get the consumers to reveal their private information (their type)?  (300-350 words)

(iii) What are the welfare implications of the discrimination in your example? Is there a potential role for government to regulate the practice? (50-100 words)

Please note that you must:

  1. Select a real example.
  2. Describe the key details in the example you are analysing.
  3. Apply the theories from the unit of study and from your own reading to the

real-world example.

  1. You are expected to undertake some research in completing this assignment,

however the bulk of your essay should focus on analysis (see point 5)

  1. In this assignment, you will also be rewarded for the depth of your analysis

using the tools that you will have been taught in the course. Check out the notes I have uploaded.

  1. Reference your work. Any standard reference style is fine, provided your

referencing is complete, consistent and correct.

  1. The ascendance of neoliberalism has coincided with invigorated forms of

social conservatism. In some ways these two social philosophies are diametrically opposed, yet in practice they have managed to cooperate.

Do neoliberalism and neoconservatism require each other?

  1. Neoliberalism is commonly associated with a focus on personal

responsibility and individual choice. Yet several theorists argue that

“family responsibility” also plays a central role in neoliberal thinking and

practice. How can we explain this apparent contradiction? And how

might it help explain the alliance between neoliberalism and

neoconservatism?

  1. What is the causal relationship between neoliberalism and the rise of

new racist movements of the far right?

  1. Various theorists, including Balibar/Wallerstein and Douglas Holmes,

argue that “culture” has displaced “biological race” as the primary

concern of the far right. Discuss the validity of this claim with reference

to contemporary expressions of xenophobia.

  1. What is political homophobia? What forces is it shaped by and what is its relationship to neoliberalism? You may use one or more case studies to

illustrate your argument.

Mohammedan fatalism embodies the fundamental error of setting man and fate over against one another as two separate things: man, it says, can resist fate and seek to fraustrate it, but in the end it always carries off the victory; so that the most reasonable thing to do is the resign oneself or to live just as one pleases. In reality every man is himself a piece of fate; when he thinks to resist fate in the way suggested, it is precisely fate that is here fulfilling itself; the struggle is imaginary, but so is the proposed resignation to fate; all these imaginations are enclosed within fate. – The fear most people feel in face of the theory of the unfreedom of the will is fear in face of Mohammedan fatalism: they think that man will stand before the future feeble, resigned and with hands clasped because he is incapable of effecting any change in it: or that he will give free rein to all his impulses and caprices because these too cannot make any worse what has already been determined. The follies of mankind are just as much a piece of fate as are its acts of intelligence: that fear in face of a belief in fate is also fate. You yourself, poor fearful man, are the implacable moira enthroned even above the gods that governs all that happens; you are the blessing or the curse and in any event the fetters in which the strongest lies captive; in you the whole future of the world of man is predetermined: it is of no use for you to shudder when you look upon yourself.
